The Tumbler Ridge Point trail is a popular hiking destination.
While there are a couple benches for people to sit at, one enterprising doctor about the town has decided to up the relaxation a few notches and installed a hammock for people to lay down in while enjoying the view.
At least, until the hammock was stolen.
So, Doctor Nigel Mathews installed a second hammock, only to have it go missing as well. And that, he says is only the tip of the issues that have been happening out on the point.
“Not only have two hammocks been stolen but now the sign asking people not to light fires has gone, snapped off,” he says. “Not only do fires scar the delicate vegetation in that area, but if a strong westerly wind sprang up, the town itself would be in danger.”
Not only that, he says, there is a section of trail that goes past a section where the ground is being eroded, and there is now a one to two metre overhang. “This section of the trail is extremely dangerous. If someone fell through there is little to stop them falling into the Murray river 80m below. An EXTREME DANGER sign was put up, but this has disappeared.”
And, to add insult to injury, many of the signs that haven’t been destroyed have been defaced and vandalized.
If you have any information about the missing hammocks or wish to return them, it would be appreciated by many.
