Constable Jonathan Kohut is hoping to launch a youth road safety incentive program here in Tumbler Ridge.
Kohut, who has been here since January 2025, says that the RCMP were unable to host their traditional spring Bike Rodeo this year, after what happened in February. The Bike Rodeo “promotes road safety for youth as they head into the summer months.”
However, he says, he joined the local mountain bike club for their final Bike Bus event of the school year. “Seeing the enthusiasm, smiles, and community spirit displayed by the children and volunteers was truly inspiring,” he says. “With that experience in mind, I would like to launch a youth road safety incentive program. When I was growing up, police officers in my community would occasionally reward children who were riding their bikes safely with coupons for a free McDonald’s ice cream cone or an A&W root beer. It was a simple gesture, but it left a lasting impression and encouraged positive behaviour.
Kohut says before coming to Tumbler Ridge, he was in Dawson Creek, where he would conduct “positive traffic stops,” handing out gift cards to drivers. demonstrating safe and responsible driving habits.
“Building on those experiences, I would like to create a local program that rewards young people who are making smart and safe choices while biking, walking, scootering, or otherwise using our roads responsibly. After everything our community has been through, I think our children and youth have earned the opportunity to enjoy a cold treat on a hot day while being recognized for their positive behaviour.”
To bring this idea to fruition, he is contacting local businesses and community members to gauge interest in supporting the project. The level of community support, he says, will help determine the scope and reach of the program. “My vision is to partner with local businesses to provide treats such as ice cream cones, milkshakes, slushies, freezies, and other refreshments. Youth who demonstrate safe road behaviour could receive coupons redeemable at participating businesses and community locations, such as the RCMP detachment, Community Centre, Visitor Centre, Museum, Fire Hall, or other willing partners.”
He says this is intended to celebrate local youth, encourage road safety, and strengthen the positive connections that make Tumbler Ridge such a special place to live.
