Recently, I had the opportunity to interview most of the folks who attended the BC Seniors Games. I learned what makes these healthy individuals thrive in their senior years. I was particularly interested in how they deal with common challenges of aging such as general physical decline and loss.
They all agree that keeping fit using a variety of different exercise is important not only for general health and conditioning for their event but also for enjoyment and social diversion. Glen Miller knows that overall cross-training includes brain health. This year he decided to try his hand at cribbage in the games because it keeps his mind active. Jean Slaney swears by the benefits of participating in many sporting and social activities but also counts her blessings for the good health she enjoys.
Most of the group have had their fair share of surgeries and chronic conditions. However, none of them believe in taking regular doses of pharmaceutical pain medication. Lloyd Hanberg says there are all sorts of good stuff out there now in terms of non-prescription options. He’s had great results using Hempz cream on his arthritic shoulder.
A few of them use the hot tub as a means of preventing muscle and joint stiffness. Deb Bain comments that aging hurts and that it’s important to manage pain. She says keeping mobile is the best thing she can do for it, but she’s not averse to taking pain medication when needed.
My inspiration from this group comes from their positive can-do attitude. They all agree that despite their various health conditions there’s no point in complaining about life’s inevitable setbacks and losses. Terry Vandenbosch explains that complaining can dominate your sport and affect your game. He maintains that nobody wants to hear your tough story, so just get on with it and enjoy life.
Our local 55+ athletes wish to encourage others to participate in the Games. They say winning medals is always great, but it’s the social aspect that keeps them returning to the event. And you don’t need to be a champion to join in the fun.
Speaking of champions: these athletes deserve recognition in our community. I’m not sure what it takes to qualify for our sports hall of fame, but I nominate these extraordinary athletes.
