Healthy Aging at the Triathlon

Yvonne Poulin, RMT

Healthy aging is my schtick.

Since I moved to Tumbler Ridge in January 2018 I’ve been impressed by the number of healthy seniors who are keeping physically active and volunteering at social events such as this year’s triathlon.

Clearly, healthy aging is a topic not limited to persons over 65. Do you remember how energetic, flexible, and strong you were in your 20s and 30s? You probably bounced back after injuries or setbacks and were able to work productively after a weekend of late nights. This Prime of Life phase is something many people take for granted until it gradually slips away.

At some point you may wonder why you now suffer from aches and pains, insomnia, moodiness, lack of motivation or fatigue. Any medical conditions withstanding, have you noticed the correlation between your lack of exercise or decreased social activities and your current symptoms?

The human body is like a precision vehicle that needs to be used and maintained in order to perform at optimal levels. The expression “If you don’t use it you lose it” is true when it comes to your physical and mental state of health. The fabulous news is that it’s never too late to improve on health and wellness. The first step is deciding to set aside time to take care of YOU.

Challenge yourself to enter as a competitor in the Triathlon to gain a ‘bucket list’ achievement. Volunteer so that you’re not only helping others but benefiting from the social interaction. Attend a community event to take your mind off your troubles and experience the feel-good dynamic.

Contact either the Visitor’s Information Centre at 250-242-3123 or the Community Centre at 250-242-4246 to learn about upcoming community events and activities.
