A long-standing tradition with locals, scrabble-players young and old showed up at the library day after day to try their hand at creating a word out of seven random letters (apologizes to the lady who had seven consonants to work with that one day).
Wall Scrabble was a huge hit, and with different age categories, anyone was eligible to win a prize. Except for us library employees of course, since we were hosting the whole thing.
In case you’ve never played Wall Scrabble, here’s how it works. There’s a carpeted piece of wall by Mr. Chris’ desk. Each day you could come in and receive seven random letters and a bonus tile, and you try to spell a word on the wall. Not necessarily the longest word, but one worth the most points (although if you use all seven letters you would receive extra points).
There were some veteran Scrabble players coming in dutifully each day, and there were some newbies who decided to give it a shot.
The winners of the Adult, Teen, and Child categories were, respectively: Stephanie Rowe and Ruth Tummonds (tie), Zoe Ernst, and Annie Du.
Winners each received a Scrabble board game to call their own.
In addition to Wall Scrabble, the library had another competition just for the kids. On the Wednesday leading up to the Winter Carnival, children scrambled to the library after school to participate in a special superhero-themed LEGO Club.
Just as creative and fun as regular LEGO Club, but with the added incentive of winning a prize. To make it fair for the young ones, we had different age categories as well, with 0-5, 6-9, and 10-12. The winners of those were: Braxton, for his super-fast Green Lantern, Jace, for his Iron Man/Superman/Flash/Infinity Gauntlet mashup, and Paige for her Doctor Strange, with Miriam as runner-up for her Groot. The kids had a blast creating their entries, with many proudly bringing their parents in to show them off.
All in all, the competitions that were held in the library this Winter Carnival were a huge success. There were of course other competitions that were held for the Winter Carnival, but to be honest, Wall Scrabble and LEGO Club are the most fun to watch as they’re happening (up until the Tobox’n Race).
If you want us to bring either back for future events, let us know! You know where to find us.
