On August 13, a series of Information to Obtain (ITO) documents—basically the Canadian version of a search warrant—were released to members of the media. While much of the information was redacted, there are some new bits of information to be gleaned from the documents.
For instance. According to an Application for a Warrant to Search document filed by Constable Paquin, the Critical Incident commander reportedly informed the attending officers that the suspect was possibly Jesse Jacobs, “the eldest kid in the Strain/Jacobs family, and that they were obsessed with guns.” (According to Constable Paquin, this was in error, and that the suspect was from the “Strang/Jacobs” family.)
At some time after this original report (the time stamps have been redacted), a possible second shooter—Jesse Van Rootselaar—was identified.
At the time, it was not known that the shooter was known by both names. Indeed, most people around town referred to the shooter as Jesse Strang. This meant that, while the body of one shooter was identified with self-inflicted gunshot wounds early on, a shelter in place order for the town extended for hours after the incident, until CCTV video from the school was reviewed and it was confirmed that there was only one shooter.
