Tomorrow was supposed to be the BC NDP’s throne speech.
Instead, that’s been cancelled, and Thursday, Feb. 12 will be proclaimed a day of mourning in the province of British Columbia.
The news came at noon today, in a joint release from Mike Farnworth, Government House Leader; Á’a:líya Warbus, Official Opposition House Leader; and Rob Botterell, BC Greens House Leader.
“The horrific shooting and tragic loss of life in Tumbler Ridge have devastated this small community and impacted people across B.C., Canada and around the world,” reads the release.
“In recognition of these events, the planned Throne Speech for tomorrow will not be delivered.
“At noon, the legislative assembly will stand for a moment of silence in honour of the victims in Tumbler Ridge, their families and the entire community. The house will then adjourn.
“At 2 p.m., the lieutenant governor will deliver a speech in the house dedicated to the people of Tumbler Ridge, followed by brief legally required procedures.
“The people of British Columbia mourn together with the people of Tumbler Ridge. We are united and will continue to ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days.”
The news comes alongside a message that the premier that he and Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, will be coming to town this evening.
Premier, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General to travel to Tumbler Ridge to “meet with people impacted by yesterday’s tragedy, community leadership, and officials on the ground.”
Joining them will be federal ministers Gary Anandasangaree and Gregor Robinson, who are representing the federal government on the ground in Tumbler Ridge.
“Provincial resources from across British Columbia are being mobilized to Tumbler Ridge to support the community, including mental-health and victims-services professionals. People are on the ground now, with more en route and preparing to travel.”
