Youth in hospital after being hit by vehicle

Just after 7:30 on January 30, a local teen was hit by an automobile at the intersection of Mackenzie Way and Willow Drive.

The young man was crossing the street with his girlfriend when the vehicle went through the intersection and struck him. According to the boy’s mother, he was on the last bar of the crosswalk, nearly off the road. He managed to push his girlfriend out of the way so the vehicle didn’t hit her, but he was not able to avoid the vehicle.

A passerby was able to provide medical attention until emergency services arrived.

According to the RCMP, the driver remained on scene and cooperated with the police, and has been charged under the Motor Vehicle Act.

While he was still conscious when the ambulance arrived, he sustained skull fractures with a brain bleed. According to his mother, there was blood coming out of his ear for almost two days, and it is still a going concern. As the paper was going to press, he had just had a seizure.

His knee was also damaged, and will need to be operated on once his head injuries have been brought under control. “He is in a lot of pain,” says his mom. “We are trying to remain positive.”

She says eye witnesses report the driver was on his phone at the time of the incident, but the RCMP has not confirmed what the driver was charged with.
