On February 18 of next year, the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera will have its last curtain call on its very last show. After 35 years, the longest running Broadway show of all time is finally calling it quits.
In 2016, the Grizzly Valley Players brought to an end a successful ten year run of its production of Rocky Horror Night. While not quite as monumental a production as Phantom, it was also far more accessible, as you didn’t have to travel to New York to see it.
(Speaking of New York, the Rocky Horror Picture Show was (at one time) shown weekly there (and in London), all year round.)
After a six-year hiatus, the show will be back on stage here in Tumbler Ridge, so don’t miss your chance to “come up to the lab and see what’s on the slab”!
In its first year the Grizzly Valley Players (GVP) did the production at two different times of the year.
This year, GVP director Erin Wanvig is specifically avoiding the last weekend before Halloween so the event won’t conflict with both the Blunden’s Yard Haunt (at the fairgrounds this year) and a Halloween party put on by the Western Steakhouse. The new date will land on the same date as the TR Public Library’s mini golf tournament, however the two organizations have discussed and managed to work together on a change in end time for the golf tournament so that both events can go forward.
Both organizations are members of the Tumbler Ridge Community Arts Council, and Wanvig expressed appreciation to the library for their willingness to coordinate, and hopes residents will be able to attend the event of their choice, or both.
The date of the events will be Saturday, November 12. As usual, Rocky Horror Night will take place at the Community Centre in rooms 4/5. It will include the running of the 1975 original movie, the cast of GVP in character acting alongside during musical numbers, and will be followed by a Costume Party with DJ music. The event will be licensed (cash bar), so 19+ only.
No outside materials will be permitted, and audience participation (AP) packs will be provided to each attendee so they can enjoy the famed mayhem of showings of Rocky Horror Picture Show. The aim is for audience to indulge in throwing AP items, shouting expected names, and singing along where they know the lyrics. There will be screen prompts running during the film, so that people know when to use their AP items. It is indeed a night of great fun and ridiculous behaviour.

Ticket information will be posted on bulletin boards and on several Facebook sites, originating specifically from ‘Rocky Horror Night in Tumbler Ridge’. Tickets will be sold at the front desk of the community centre (cash only) beginning October 24, and other arrangements can be made through Director Erin Wanvig. Remember: it’s just a jump to the left, then a step to the right….
