The nomination period has come and gone, leaving behind a dozen people who are willing to run for local office.
There are three candidates for mayor. We discussed the first two—Don McPherson and Darryl Krakowka last issue. The third person on the list is Rick Consalvi.
Consalvi has an educational background in Addiction and Community Support Work. “I have learned the importance of working together and building connections with openness and full transparency,” he says.
He has previously sat on the Provincial Executive of the British Columbia General Employees’ Union (BCGEU), an elected position. Here, he says, “I learned about leadership, negotiation, governance, financial management, inclusion, equity, and fiduciary responsibilities.”
He is a father and husband, which has taught him “patience, understanding, unconditional love and gratitude,” he says.
“As mayor, I will attend all council meetings, speak with constituents, answer questions and listen to concerns. I’ll oversee public service departments and ensure they are working properly. I will represent our town at meetings with officials of other government entities, attend public events in an official capacity, and work towards fostering healthy economic growth to make our residents more prosperous. I will show empathy, understanding, and try my hardest to find common ground when discussing public matters.”
Roxanne Gulick is the sole candidate for the position of school trustee, meaning she will be acclaimed for the position.
Gulick is also letting her name stand for council. After going most of the nomination period with fewer names than needed, four people dropped off their packages in the last few days, meaning there are seven people running for the six council seats.
Running for council are incumbents Chris Norbury and Joanne Kirby and newcomers Ron Hofman, Luana Dussealt, Nicole Noksana, Garret Golhof and Ken Klikach.
Candidates have until Friday, September 16 to withdraw if they decide that they would rather not run. One candidate—Timothy Walker—has already taken advantage of this deal, removing his name from the list.
The Tumbler Ridge Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an All-Candidates forum on September 27.
