News bites

There’s a lot of news that’s been happening around Tumbler Ridge; too much to fit into an eight page paper.

So over the last few weeks, we’ve been starting to do a daily brief, called Today in Tumbler, to let people know what’s happening in Tumbler Ridge.

These updates are about ten minutes long, and cover everything from happenings at the Community Centre to important articles in other news sources that touch on Tumbler Ridge.

I’m also trying to live stream any important interview that I do for the paper online, including the one that makes up the bulk of this week’s editorial.

You can watch these at the Tumbler RidgeLines Facebook page, or at
www.youtube.com/@Tumblerridgelines.

In the spirit of this, here’s a quick look at some of the newsbites that you may have missed.

We talked to Yvonne Poulin at the Tumbler Ridge Community Healing Space, about how it has lined up funding to remain open one more month.

We talked about the wild weather we have experienced this spring, with fresh snow and temperatures well below zero.

On March 31, the Welcome Baby party (which was postponed after the shooting) was held.

Access to the paid Community Centre facilities—the pool, arena and weight room—were free to use for community members for the month of March, thanks to a donation from Tourmaline Oil Corp.

Bob Zimmer shared a story about Christina Walker at the prayer breakfast in Ottawa, about how she dragged Maya and Abel Jr under a desk after they both were shot, saving Maya’s life and preserving Abel’s last words to his family: “Tell my mom and dad that I love them.”

Zimmer and MLA Larry Neufeld have opened an office in Tumbler Ridge, and are trying to get into town once a week.

After Zimmer told his story, Maya’s mom Cia provided her own update adding new details to the events that happened that day, saying the story that has been circulating—that Maya was trying to lock the door when she was shot—is not correct. Popular opinion is that Maya was either blocking the door when the shots were fired, or was trying to lock the door.

That is not, says Cia, what happened. “It is now my understanding that the door was attempted to be locked at the beginning class, but wouldn’t,” says Cia. “So, same truth, different timeline, big difference.”

Instead, says Cia, Maya and Abel were both standing behind Christina as she sat at a computer.

Finally—and this one wasn’t in Tumbler Ridge Today—(as I just got this note as I was going to print), but according to OpenAI, Sam Altman spoke with Premier Eby and Mayor Krakowka to convey his condolences and to apologize that this matter was not referred to law enforcement after the account was banned last June. While it has been known that Altman talked to the Premier and the mayor, this is the first time it has come out that he apologized. He is planning to apologize to the community as well.
