Doors Open day

On July 26, The Tumbler Ridge Museum celebrated the second annual Doors Open day here in Tumbler Ridge.

The day was also a celebration of 25 years since the initial dinosaur footprint discovery down at Flatbed Creek (see last issue).

Doors open is put on by the Northern Trails Historical Society. The organization was established in 2015 to connect the museums in the Northeastern part of BC. “The Alaska Highway is our main street stretching for hundreds of miles from Dawson Creek to the Yukon border,” says their webpage. The organization shares heritage issues, practices and programs among the eight museums in the Peace River Regional District and the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality, as an offshoot of the Peace Liard Regional Arts Council.

Each weekend, a different group of museums, historic buildings and/or tourist locations opened their doors for no charge to the public.

On Saturday, July 26, for instance, people could come to the Tumbler Ridge Museum for free, but the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum as also open to the public. The week before, visitors could have gone to the museum in Fort St. John or Taylor, or visited the Tse’k’wa National Historic Site in Charlie Lake (also known as the Charlie Lake Cave).

According to Caris Windhausen, Programs and Events Coordinator at the museum, there were over 170 visitors. 21 successfully completed Community Passports were entered in to a prize draw (Jessica H was the winner), and they created a community mural, which now hangs in the museum’s education room.

Above photo: All our reporters (read: me) were (was) out of town (at WestMo days) on July 26, and we (read: I) forgot to ask the museum to take pictures of the event beforehand, so here’s a shot of the set-up, because they were way too busy to get any pictures of the activities while they were happening
