Conuma First Aid Team goes to provincials

On June 5, members of the Conuma Mine Rescue team competed at the North Central South (NCS) Zone Competition in Squamish and “represented us with pride and skill!” according to a post on the company’s Facebook page.

In the six person surface team, Tumbler Ridge took gold for Best Rope Task, Best Field Task and Best Aggregate (Bench + Written), which lead to a three-way tie overall. Unfortunately, the team fell just short of the move to provincial.

However, the three-person First Aid Team placed first overall and moved on to provincials. Taylor Olsen won Best Written and Best Captain, while Selena Logue took Best Spare Written.

Provincials were held the next day at the Britannia Mine Museum, where the team from Hudbay Minerals Inc., Copper Mountain Mine took the title.

Organized by the Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals and the Mining Association of BC (MABC), this is year 67 for the annual competition. It “maintains and showcases the BC mining industry’s leading and highly specialized health, safety and rescue practices, bringing together mine rescue teams from all over the province to test their emergency response abilities.”

Competing Mine Rescue teams from both surface and underground mines from around the province were there to show off their rescue techniques, “aiming to be the top team and to earn the respect and admiration of their peers, and gauge the capabilities of mine rescue in Industry today.”
