Shots fired in incident on upper bench

According to police, members of the Tumbler Ridge RCMP were called to a home for a report of a disturbance. “When police arrived they heard a gunshot and took appropriate action in response to the presence of a firearm,” says the official statement from the RCMP. “Shortly after police arrived, an adult woman exited the home on her own accord. Moments later an adult man also exited the house and police noted that he appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound. He was immediately taken to hospital for the necessary medical care.”

Here at the paper, we received door cam footage of the event.

At 7:55 pm, an RCMP vehicle pulls up to a house, located on Bullmoose Place, to investigate the domestic disturbance call. A second RCMP vehicle arrives a minute later, and officers from both gathered on the street before approaching the door. While at the door, a gunshot is heard from inside and the officers draw their weapons and retreat to behind one of the RCMP vehicles. One officer retrieves a riffle from the truck and makes it ready.

At 8:11, a third RCMP vehicle arrives. The members confer for a few moments, then moves to the end of the street, presumably to block traffic.

At 8:15, the second RCMP vehicle to arrive backs down the street about 25 metres, with the officer with the rifle walking beside it, gun still at the ready.

About ten minutes later, a female voice is heard yelling “help, ambulance!” The RCMP vehicle moves forward to its original position, and the officer with the rifle calls to the woman to come out. At 8:26, a female dressed in a bathrobe comes out of the house, hands held above her head as instructed by the RCMP. She is taken into custody.

At 9:40, two unmarked vehicles, apparently from the Dawson Creek detachment, arrive, along with an ambulance. Ten minutes later, more vehicles arrive, including a second ambulance, and the officers can be heard to be yelling for someone they identify as “Russell” to come out with his hands up.

At this point, a man with no shirt or shoes, wearing a pair of loose jogging pants appears.

The RCMP tells him to come to them while keeping his hands in the air. The man slowly complies, though he appears unsteady on his feet. He drops to his knees putting his hands down. The officers yell for him to show them his hands. He regains his feet and moves towards the police again. The officers direct him to lay on his stomach, arms out, palms up, and they take him in to custody at 9:52, nearly two hours after the incident began.

For approximately the next two and half hours, the police investigate the scene, including flying a drone about the house to peer in the windows. At 11:45 the woman in the bathrobe (now with a blanket as well) returns to the house.

According to the RCMP, the parties involved are known to each other and police do not believe there to be any further risk to the public.

No further details have been released.
