On Monday, November 4, the Lions Club of Tumbler Ridge presented a cheque for $45,000 to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The funding will be used to purchase 35 new laptop computers to be used by students to pursue their studies.
“With the new cell phone legislation put in place this year, students are not permitted to use personal devices during class time,” says principal Stacie Deeley. “The new laptops give the students more access to technology that is permitted under the new rules. Having more laptops in the school allows the flexibility needed, for students to use technology in any classroom.”
While personal electronic devices are limited in school, the demand for technology keeps growing. Students use laptops such as writing up lab reports, essays and other assignments, editing photos in the photography class, accessing and submitting assignments to Google Classroom, creating presentations and completing graduation assessments.
English language learners might use technology for learning new skills in English, while speech to text software is used for students who need a little help with writing. Soon-to-be graduates must have access to technology to apply to post-secondary schools online.
Acquiring the 35 new laptops, says a release from the Lions, “will increase student access to these valuable tools and will result in more efficient use of class time. Students are very excited for these to arrive soon.”
The Lions Club of Tumbler Ridge raises funds throughout the year by way of its BBQs, bingos, arena concession sales, and the Flatbed Creek Campground operation. Funds raised by the Lions are used to improve health and well-being, strengthen the community and support those in need.
The Lions Club runs the meals on wheels program, among other outreach programs in the community.
