While Taylor Swift took home ten awards at the Billboard Music Awards on November 19, she failed to take home the inaugural Top Hot 100 Producer award.
Instead, that honour went to Tumbler Ridge’s own Joey Moi.
“Thank you so much for the honor,” said Moi in his acceptance speech. “For the recognition, it’s an honor to get to be a steward of an award that represents the output of an amazing group of people who all come together and make these records happen.”
The Top Hot 100 Producer Award is new for this year—one of nine new awards total—and honours individuals who shepherd recording artists, helping them arrange their songs, pick out material to put on albums and working with them in the studio to coax out the best recording possible.
Moi is considered one of the industry’s best producers and was named one of the 50 best producers of the century. He broke into the industry by working with Nickleback (the song Photograph is about Moi), and more recently has become one of the biggest names in Country Music, producing Florida Georgia Line and Morgan Wallen.
Moi grew up in Tumbler Ridge, and moved to Vancouver after graduating, where he got involved in the music industry. He moved to Nashville in 2010.
Earlier in the year, Moi set a record of 13 weeks in the top spot of the Hot 100 Producers charts, with 12 of those songs from Wallen, and one from Hardy.
In his speech, Moi thanked the artists he has worked with. “Next, the songwriters who all got together and pitch their best work to us. All the session musicians who sit in the studio with us and bring these songs to life. After the music is made and turned in, you know, you’ve got a lot of a lot of marketing people and promotion people and publicity and artist management that all come together and make sure this music gets to you guys. And last but not least, I’d like to thank the fans for always listening and making this happen.
“Thank you guys.”
