Cognitive Care Kits are now available at the Tumbler Ridge Public Library. These kits, available for a 7-day loan with a valid Library card, contain a wealth of resources to engage loved ones or friends experiencing any kind of cognitive issues, including memory loss, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, or impairment due to a traumatic brain injury. All three available kits are completely unique, containing a mix of puzzles, games, crafts, conversation starters and more.
These kits were created by Northern Health, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, through a grant from the United Way of Northern BC. Originally inspired by similar kits created by Southern Ontario libraries, these kits were designed to offer additional resources to caregivers, families, and friends of those experiencing cognitive issues. They were then offered to public libraries, including the Tumbler Ridge Public Library, as libraries tend to serve as Community Hubs, reaching a large portion of the population.
These kits can serve as an essential resource for caregivers and family members to engage their charge or loved one in a meaningful way on a daily basis. The difficulty levels of the activities provided in each kit vary to accommodate a larger range of cognitive impairment or decline, but provide the same level of engagement, whether it be mental, physical, emotional or social.
Each kit comes with a complete list of activities, along with additional resources. A QR code has been provided on the posters, linking to videos demonstrating best practices and helpful tips regarding kit use and user engagement.
All kits are now available for a 7-day loan period to those with a valid Library card for free.
