Tumbler Ridge advances in search for BC’s Best Small Town

Tumbler Ridge got past Chetwynd with 53.78 percent of the popular vote to move onto CBC’s Best Small Town Content.

“After a long cold winter, spring has sprung and British Columbians are eager to get outside and enjoy what this great province has to offer, making this the perfect time to celebrate BC’s best kept secret – its unique and diverse small towns,” says the CBC website. “We want to know which small town you think is the best, whether you’ve visited it or you’re fortunate enough to live in it!”

The voting started last week, where Tumbler Ridge blew past Charlie Lake with 70.12 percent of the vote.

Chetwynd, meanwhile, eliminated Hudson’s Hope from the contest, edging by with 51.44 of the vote.

Each week, two towns with populations under 12,000 are pitted head to head. Each Tuesday, people are able to vote for the best town on Vancouver Island. On Wednesday, it is best town in the Southwest corner of BC, on Thursday, it is best Interior town and on Friday, it is the best small town in the north.

The contest started with 128 small towns. Half were eliminated in week one, and another quarter last week, bringing the total number of contestants down to 32.

This week, Tumbler Ridge will be facing it’s biggest challenge yet—literally—as it is going up against Quesnel, with a population of 23,146, who beat out Mackenzie.

Tumbler Ridge is the last town left from The Peace, and, if successful against Quesnel, will go up against the winner of the Beautiful face-off between Bella Coola and Bella Bella.

The winner of that contest will then take on the winner of the Northwest region in three weeks.

The winning town will be announced on-air on Friday, April 29th. “In addition to earning bragging rights, the winning small town will receive special prizes!”
