BC parks has announced a system-wide closure of all provincial parks. This action is being taken in response to the call for increased action to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, according to the Peace District Recreation Services Officer Nicole Tattam, this does not mean no access to the parks, at least in the North.
“As most of you are aware our campground facilities are all currently closed due to COVID-19,” says Tattam. “Most of our parks are closed for the season and under snow anyways. Liard River Hot Springs is an exception—it is currently under a full closure—the public is not allowed in this park.”
However, she says, “all other BC Parks in the Peace Region and Northern Rockies are still open to the public to go for skis, walks, snowshoes etc. Our facilities are not being maintained and are considered closed. Things like outhouses, playgrounds and picnic shelters should not be used at this time.” (Note: This information was from an attached email dated March 25 that was attached to the new email announcing the park closures; sorry about the confusion)
This means all infrastructure, including trails are now closed.
In addition to the full system closure, the campground closure has been extended to May 31st, 2020.
BC Parks continues to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak closely and is following the recommendations set out by the provincial health officer and Minister of Health for decisions related to closure and reopening of parks and facilities.
