Home Routes kicks off with Raine Hamilton

The 2019-2020 season of Home Routes gets underway October 23 with Raine Hamilton, whop performs a style of music that is best described as acoustic chamber folk (aka folk baroque); shades of Joni Mitchell and Sarah Harmer, a touch of jazz and a healthy dose of traditional chamber music.

Hamilton has a clear, bold voice that soars above the musical accompaniment. Last year, she was awarded the Canadian Folk Music Award for Emerging Artist of the Year

She recently released her new album, Night Sky, the follow up to her 2015 Past Your Past. The new album “tips between the earthly and the otherworldly;” says her bio. “It is anchored in relatable lived experience, while reaching into the space just beyond, thinning the veil between here and there, affording safe passage to the rough and beautiful places.”

Raine performs alone, as a two-piece set with a cello or double bass (when she comes to Tumbler Ridge, she will be joined by Cellist Natanielle Felicitas) as a trio with both the above, or add in a drummer to create a full band. She’s even performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Hamilton is a charming and funny storyteller, pairing vulnerable tunes with engaging story intros. She believes that music is for everyone, and that we all have something to share. As an experienced educator, she frequently does concerts with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, to help make live music accessible to the Deaf community.

The show takes place October 23 at the Visitor Information Centre. Contact them at 250-242-3123 for information and tickets. The next concert will be folk singer Logan McKillop on November 17. Future performances include Traditional Quebecois fiddler David Boulanger (March 4), roots singer Brigitte Jardin (April 2) and traditional Newfoundland Band the Navigators (May 1).
