New Northern Health Facebook group for Tumbler Ridge residents

Trent

On September 12, Northern Health launched a new Facebook group for discussion of health related issues for Tumbler Ridge and area.

The new group, called “Northern Health Community Group – Tumbler Ridge & Area,” is “a place to learn, bring awareness to, and discuss, all things health in the Tumbler Ridge region.”

The group is there to discuss health resources, information on NH services in Tumbler Ridge, health concerns and questions, health care facilities and services in town, featured jobs and the people and activities undertaken by Northern Health to help promote healthy lifestyles in northern BC, including great stories from your area.”

The site—despite being on Facebook—is designed to be a safe, welcoming place, and Northern Health says they reserve the right to remove comments that are abusive, defamatory, harassing or contain vulgar language. “We understand that sometimes topics like health and wellness can be frustrating to discuss,” says Northern Health. “We encourage conversations and everyone having their say, but we will not tolerate vulgar/profane language, trolling, or bullying in any way. The purpose of this group is to improve health and wellness in your region and community, with the aim of enhancing the health of Northerners – please be mindful of these goals!”

The Northern Health Group Admin will delete without notice any posts, comments, or links that contain racism, sexism, targeting of a religion, nudity, sexually explicit photos or threats.

The site is, obviously, not the place to go in the case of a medical emergency. That’s the emergency room; if you need an ambulance, call 9-1-1. If you need non-emergency medical advice, you can also call 8-1-1, which is the number for HealthLink BC. HealthLink BC provides reliable non-emergency health information and advice in British Columbia, as opposed to, say, stuff you read on Facebook.

Calling HealthLink BC will allow you to talk to either a registered dietitian, a pharmacist, an exercise professional, or a registered nurse.

The group is based on a Chetwynd group, which has been active since April of this year.

To join in, go to www.facebook.com/groups/NHTumblerRidge/, or find the link from the Tumbler Ridgelines page.
