The province’s most popular half marathon just keeps getting more popular.
After website issues forced organizers to scrub the original registration day on Monday, April 1.
Even with a lot more bandwidth behind it, the registration site struggled to keep up with demand.
“Technically, the race filled up in about three hours, because we had issues at the start,” says Race Director Jerrilyn Schembri.
This is the fastest it’s ever filled up. “The previous record is six hours, I think,” says Schembri. “Unfortunately, it means that a lot of people who wanted to run the race were unable to register.”
But even with a cap of 1000, resources are stretched to the limit. “We have a limited number of volunteers,” she says. “There isn’t space for parking for more people out there, and the race heads up and into the alpine, so we need to make sure we are able to do the race every year.”
This year, the Emperor’s Challenge happens August 10. While there are no more spaces for runners, there are still openings for volunteers.
