The winner of last year’s card building contest. Submissions are already rolling in (or being carried in) for this year’s contest.
Bree helps with the decorations for the family dance on Friday.
Things are already underway for the annual Winter Carnival.
The event, which started about five years ago, is a celebration of community and of life in Tumbler Ridge in the darkest, coldest month of the year.
The big event is the Tobox’n Race, which takes place Sunday at 1 pm, and will see kids and sometimes even adults hurl themselves down the sledding hill in their homemade creations. Prizes are awarded for fastest in class, but also for most creative cardboard creation.
If you’re planning on going to the races, show up an hour early for a free Weiner roast, complete with hot chocolate and giant walking condiments.
If hurtling down a hill on a piece of cardboard doesn’t sound like your cuppa, Lindsay Roberts will be leading a Snowshoe around the golf course (staying off the ski trails, like all responsible snowshoers do).
If you are thinking about entering one of the contests (Wall Scrabble, Edible Castle or House of Cards), the deadline for that is Saturday at 11. (If you are planning on participating in the Lego Building Contest, those entries have to be in by Friday at 5).
Saturday is also the day that the pancake breakfast is happening. That runs from 9-12. It runs concurrently with the craft fair, which will be in rooms 4&5.
Wait, isn’t the pancake breakfast in rooms 4&5? Usually, but this year it’s being moved to the curling lounge.
Saturday afternoon will see Face Painting and Balloons happening in the Community Centre Foyer.
Nearby, in the Fireside Lounge, the annual coffee house will be happening. This is another change of venue, as the coffee house has historically been in rooms 4&5. Dave Price will be playing a solo set at 11:30, then at 12:15, Top of the Hill will be joining him. Sometime around 1:15 or 1:30, they’ll put away their acoustic instruments and Downwater Union will come in with their electric instruments to blow people’s socks off.
Right before they start to play, the contest winners will be announced, at 1:00 pm. And at the same time, the final event for the Volcano Building Contest will be happening. It promises to be explosive. (What do you mean I’ve used that one already?) At 2:00, and running to 6:00, the Family Curling Funspiel is happening, an afternoon of free curling for the family, but only if you have signed up by THURSDAY at 5!
That evening, the Arts Council is hosting an adults-only Paint Night at the Dinosaur Discovery Gallery.
Friday, the events get underway at 12 pm with a crib tournament in room 4.
Mask Making at the Library and Volcano Building in Room 4 continue at 3 pm on Friday.
The Gingerbread Family Dance happens from 5:30 to 7:30 in Room 5. I might be biased, having spent four hours helping my wife decorate the place yesterday, but the room looks awesome, and it promises to be a fun time for all ages.
Note that this is a family dance, not a kid’s dance. Kids are not allowed without a parent or guardian.
After the dance, at 8:30, there will be youth bingo for kids in grades 5-12.
